Often the work begins en plein air, outdoors on location, and is finished up in the studio. Sometimes I go on photo fieldtrips and capture images to bring back and create the painting entirely in the studio. I look for scenes with strong compositions and texture. I often return to the same subject several times and in different seasons, to explore variations of light, angle, weather conditions or water flow. I usually work slowly, using many multiple layers of color to achieve depth and alive-ness. I feel the colors vibrate, first entering the eye, then the heart of the viewer.
